The sad news has reached us that Piet Kruithof, one of the founders of the Dutch branch of SCI, passed away recently, aged 92.

This Guide for Camp Leaders, Hosts and Volunteers has been an indirect result of a seminar that took place in Stockholm in 1998 with participants from SCI branches and partners located around the Baltic Sea. It was subsequently produced by the Swedish branch IAL in co-operation with the Finnish branch KVT to try to raise the awareness of environmental issues and concerns that may arise during workcamps.

2020, when the first one hundred years of SCI will be celebrated, is moving closer, so it is time to remember another anniversary event: In November 1990, SCI celebrated its 70th anniversary in Verdun, France - as we all know, the first international voluntary service had started in November 1920 to reconstruct the village of Esnes in the surroundings of Verdun that had been devastated by German troops during the First World War. The anniversary celebration was combined with the 54th statutory International Committee Meeting (ICM). Another celebration event took place in India in the same month.

For this and the next issue of From the Archives I had placed two nice objects on the shelf next to my desk some time ago already – but then I learned about the death of a very old friend from the Swiss branch of SCI, Fridolin Trüb (see article Swiss SCI veteran and lifelong peace activist Fridolin Trüb died, at age 97), and so I changed my mind and chose an object that is strongly related to this extraordinary SCI volunteer and peace activist.

Today I learned that our friend Fridolin Trüb, former president of the Swiss branch of SCI and a lifelong activist for peace and social justice, has peacefully passed away three days ago.

He was older than SCI - born in the east of Switzerland in October 1919, exactly while far away in the Netherlands the first Bilthoven conference took place and the very idea of an international voluntary service for peace was born.
